The 13th National Hillman Rally - Ballarat - 25th - 28th March 2016

Another National Hillman Rally has come and gone, and what a good rally it was. The weather was mild by Ballarat standards, given it is the coldest city in Victoria.

There was an excellent attendance of 102 participants travelling in 46 Hillmans, 2 Commers, 4 other Rootes vehicles and 6 moderns. Rally headquarters, the Belltower Motor Inn was comfortable with friendly and helpful staff, the runs were well planned and interesting; and the two dinners were held at entertaining locations with first class food. The band on Sunday night played everything from Edith Piaf to Abba and The Beatles.

Our thanks go to the rally committee of the Rootes Group Car Club Victoria for a job well done. In 2018 we are off to Victor Harbor and, for the first time in many years, the rally will not be held during Easter. The dates for the 2018 rally are Friday 27th to Monday 30th April 2018.

A big thanks to Jim Wilson, Walter Anker and Paul Johnson for the wonderful photographs taken during the rally.

Enjoy reading this month's Hillmanews where you will be able to read some reports about the 13th National Hillman Rally at Ballarat, (25-29 March) as well as enjoy some great photos and reports about the Hawksnest/Tea Gardens Motorfest which was held 12/13 March. It was certainly a busy month for us, and many of us were able to enjoy sharing our love of Hillmans as well as enjoy great company. Exactly what a good club is all about!

The Bush Council Rally - Armidale - April 2015

We had a great trip to Armidale and really enjoyed the Bush Council Rally. It gave us the chance to meet members from many other car clubs (including Allan Mead from the Central Coast who is the organiser of the National Motoring Heritage Day at The Entrance).

The rally began on Friday 3 April, and was organised by the Classic & Specialist Car Club of Northern NSW. Our very own HOCA member David Carey, was the Rally Director.

Following a leisurely three day drive from Shellharbour via Muswellbrook, Quirindi & Tamworth, we checked in at rally headquarters on Friday afternoon to be given our rally pack. This was  followed by an informal dinner at the local bowling club, where we had the opportunity to meet and chat with other club members.

On Saturday the cars were displayed at Armidale Racecourse, ironically the first wet day in Armidale since Christmas 2014! And boy oh boy, wasn't it wet! A scrumptious morning tea was provided before some members took the opportunity to visit the historic Suamarez homestead. Dinner that night  was held at the RSL club and included entertainment by an Elvis impersonator, which was a lot of fun.

Sunday saw us travelling along the picturesque  back roads to Uralla for another display and a walk around this cute little township. It was a very enjoyable  way to spend the day (which was was now warm and sunny). Sunday dinner was followed by raffles and trophy presentations.

The CSCC members, following the theme “A Step Back in Time”, dressed in period costume of the 1820’s throughout the weekend. The organisation of the rally was excellent, with some very trying weather conditions,  and everyone seemed to have a great time.

On our way home we stopped at Port Macquarie and had the chance to visit HOCA member Garry Kelly. Garry has a 1955 Minx sedan on conditional registration and a 1955 Californian nearing complete restoration. Garry also has a beautifully restored 1952 Fordson well side pickup which he brought with him from New Zealand, which is one of only two in Australia. Garry’s cars and some information about them will soon be on the website. It was great to meet one of our country members who we rarely get the chance to see.

Those attending: Mae & Paul (62 Superminx). Sadly, Brian got as far as Uralla when his Imp developed gearbox trouble and had to be towed to David’s, who generously took charge of repairs, with Brian returning home on the train to send up another gearbox. We hope to see his Imp out and about again very soon!
